MissMakesCode 22 September 2016
World Premiere Event - #MissMakesCode presented by Girl Geek Academy and held at Kilvington Grammar School. A full day event for Prep - Year 3 girls to learn and develop algorithmic thinking and confidence in programming/coding. Tickets to be sold at a nominal fee.
I approached Girl Geek Academy after being accepted as a member to ask them support the idea and implement the project with me. I feel that the only way to increase the numbers of females in IT and programming is to ensure that at an early age they are explicitly taught the thinking routines needed and exposed to role models in this area. I have been teaching Prep - Year 2 IT for the past few years and feel that the students ability is only limited by teacher expectation. I developed the event and structure, the curriculum to be taught on the day, organised the venue and staffing and worked in conjunction with Sarah Morgan on all facets. I also approached Karin Morrison of Project Zero to be part of this day presenting a keynote on thinking routines.
To instill in young girls from 5 years of age the confidence and self efficacy in this area referring to the Digital Technologies Curriculum and utilising ipad Apps to ensure solid pedagogical approaches are used. There will be explicit teaching of visible thinking skills so that the girls will be able to work in algorithmic ways to solve problems via coding, in a day of specially designed workshops. These fun and engaging workshops run by myself and Kilvington teachers will teach and practise these skills. This event will help to increase the numbers of women in future IT careers and diversify IT roles for women.
MissMakes to be branded by Girl Geek Academy, marketed and media coverage and ticketed.
MissMakesCode event has been organised and curriculum and apps developed by myself.
Annual event to be planned and future MissMakes events in 3D printing to be developed based on my DigiCon session Dream it, Make it in 19 July.
There has been no resistance to this project only excitement and praise.
